I am using Mandrake 2006. I just installed tight-vnc server and basically set it to run under username:guest
and then i run vncpasswd under guest profile to set the vnc password. After that i set the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers to run as username guest during startup.

VNCSERVERS="1:guest"

then i type in chkconfig vncserver on to turn on the vncserver

after that i start the service by typing: service vncserver start to run the vnc server.

then i use vncviewer on another box (XP) to connect to the vnc-server (mandriva).
I log in using the password that i've specified during the vncpasswd setup.

I connected succesfully but then i get a error message saying that the sound driver or something etc/dsp (permission denied)

After that I reboot the mandriva completely. after it reboots, i connect back using vncviewer and now all the menu is gone from the bar. it only has the Kmenu button and Desktop Access button.
When i clicked on the menu, all the applications are also gone missing. it says "no entries"
also i get the error message sound driver /etc/dsp cannot be access, permission denied
the only way i can launch application is just by running it from "Run command"

When i log back in locally at the box using the guest account it does the same thing to that account. but when i log in using another account (not root) everything is normal nothing is missing and no error message.

Looks to me the vncserver messed the account permission up or it might be some settings i'm missing in vncserver?

anybody has any tips/suggestions that i can try or anyone has the same issue before?

This seems fairly normal in VNC sessions AFAIK - it just means that there will be no sound. If you've got a working sound card in the machine and it works when you login to that machine locally then its fine.

I doubt this is a vnc problem if it happens when you login locally as well. Unfortunately these kinds of things happen every so often with Mandriva. Try browsing through the guest user's home directory with 'Show Hidden Files' set on in Konqueror. If you see any files or directories about menus move them somewhere else and then logout and log back in.

recently I found out that this issue happened only if i set the vncserver to run during the startup process. If initate the vncserver session manually after i log in then everything will be fine. all the menu will be there except the etc/dsp (understandable)

Also Is there a way that i can set the vncserver to use the current session that the user is currently logged in locally rather than launching a new seperate session for vnc?
in other words, is it possible to setup the vnc server to share the same desktop with current running local session?

Try x2x and x2vnc (they're both in the Mandriva software repos). There used to be one called x0rfbserver but that project has died and I think these ones do the same thing.

i guess this is a noobie question but how can i setup the x2vnc to work with vncserver? I've googling and haven't have any luck in how to setup this kind of stuff. anybody knows where i can get a documentation to setup x2vnc on linux box so that i can connect from a windows box using vncviewer?

i finally get the x0rfbserver works and does what i want. is it possible for me to launch the x0rfbserver remotely via ssh? i tried the command line but i have no luck so far it keeps saying failed. any idea?

Should have also mentioned that KDE's Remote Desktop Sharing (install the krfb package) and GNOME's Vino (vino package) allow remote access of your running X desktop as well. These should be very easy to setup - see the KDE or GNOME control centre.
