Video config problem on Mandrake install

I am installing Mandrake 10.1 and after install, always boot into text mode, indicating the configured video settings are not working properly. I have tested multiple configurations with no luck.

Card: I have a ATI Radeon 128MB X300 SE PCIe card. Install options are Radeon, Radeon (fbdev) and Radeon (fglrx). Can someone describe the differences between these 3 options? Everytime I come into this menu, Radeon (fglrx) is preselected, implying Mandrake believes this is the chip set.

Monitor: I have a flat panel Viewsonic VP912b. Default settings are 1280x1024. Selecting various different Viewsonic monitors and generic flat panel doesn't seem to be working. Can someone suggest a closest equivalent monitor driver?

thanks .
