terayon in israel

Hi

Question from a noob.

I live in israel and inherited a terayon

can someone let me know if i would be better off by going to another modem or there is hope
with a enet wire.

also, customer service is non existent in israel, and can someone let me know if i buy my own
cable modem i can hook it up and make it work, the same way a regular 56k modem pci card would work?

thanks

exlaval, in tel aviv

Generally speaking, cable modems SHOULD be portable, but there is no guarantee. Any cable modem hooked up by ethernet should work fine with Linux.

Thanks for the reply.

I was pretty disappointed by the tech support at the local cable co.
They claim to support ONLY AND ONLY windoze software and it is
specified in their basic customer agreement, (wonder what do the other
20 or 30% customers who do not use windows.) i digress.

so dropped by ebay and lo and behold there are tons of modem to be
had for a nickel and a quarter.

My question, can I just buy any modem and use instead of the one
supplied to me.

Kinda like buying a winmodem or any modem for that matter.

what i have going for me is a Terayon tj715x, it does the job in usb and xp

However wanted to expand horizons
thanks

I can't promise you that it will or won't work. DOCSIS is a standard, but they sometimes lock cable modems to certain MAC addresses and similar. It really depends on your ISP. You could ask them if a "replacement" cable modem would work.
