system stalls on boot at devfs daemon

hey all, so when restarting my computer it no longer gets past the first "starting devfs daemon [OK]" and it juts sits there. when i boot it in linux-secure it stalls at registering the computers hostname (its used as a server). is there anything i can do, or should i just reinstall linux? is there any way to go in with a bootdisk or something and move files around to the /home directory so if i have to i dont' lose any data left on /?

This may be related or not related, but try unplugging any unnecessary devices at the moment, like USB hard drives or game pads and try booting up. When I plug in my USB gamepad, it locks up my computer at the ALSA part, even though it has nothing to do with sound!

also, you can try going into interactive mode and not loading that service. I'm not sure what it does or if it's necessary.
