Sound Card Not Detected / Started

Hope somebody can help as I have just installed and updated 10.1 and cannot get my Soundcard to function. The Volume slider is always "down" and if I go to "Open Volume Control" I get the error message "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found".

I am new toMandrake (and Linux really) but this is what I have found so far.

I have used the interactive boot up and get the following when I get as far as the sound elements.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Start Service ALSA
grep: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory
grep: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory

Start Service Sound
Setting mixer settings aumix: error opening mixer
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If I try to start the ALSA Service manually in MCC it repeats the line:
grep: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is true there is no such file or directory called "devices" in the usb folder. I did try to create a folder for the hell of it as su - but just got the message back "No such file or directory" which I thought was unusual for a MKDIR.

I have been to th ALSA website and downloaded / installed the latest Driver, Tools, and Utils but still nothing starts.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Hi,

You could try alsaconf

Open a console, type : "su" to become root, then, et the prompt, enter your password.

Then type "alsaconf", hopefully it will work

Hope that helps

Cheers
