Hi I have recently installed Mandrive 2006 and quite like it, when compared to other distros such as Suse 10 or Fedora Core 4, which I have used in the past. Mandriva seems to suit my needs best, except for one thing.
When I browse the web, searching takes a long time, with typical web pages taking between 15 seconds and over a minute to render, even when they are known web sites that I visit regularly.
I am using a belkin ADSL modem with built in Router (Hardware modem) connected to the computer over an ethernet card (Realtek RTL 8139). My connection is broadband (1 Mps).
Oddly enough I do not have this problem when downloading patches or updates, they come down the line at full speed. I only have this problem when browsing websites.
Works great, use for firefox on microsoft box as well. Won't show speed difference till you reboot firefox. For additional tweaks if you need try here: http://www.tweakfactor.com/articles/...oxtweak/4.html
Have not tried stuff in second link myself yet. Always do the top one try it if you have not already.
I've done the tweaks with Firefox, and it makes very little difference, I have since uninstalled firefox and now use Mozilla with which performance is the same. It's the same with Knoqueror and even opera, which I downloaded and tried yesterday after trying the tweaks. The only clue I've got is that mozilla gives me the message 'resolving host' at the bottom of the browser, that takes a long time, before the web page flashes up fairly quickly.
I've since tweaked mozilla which makes no difference to web browsing but has doubled my download speed of patches and programs etc.
There's a good chance it is to do with ipv6. LE2006 by default enables ipv6, but if you don't have an ipv6 capabale router, it can be slow. I had this and had the following advice from Mandriva sites.
Quote
Did you try adding to /etc/modprobe.conf:
alias net-pf-10 off
That turns off ipv6. (Why it's called "net-pf-10"? I have no flaming idea.)

Worked for me.
You need to reboot to make it effective.
The resolving name slow is suggestive that your machine is trying ipv6, then reverting to ipv4. So as chris_prior suggested in a terminal:
su
for root privilage, then type
echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf
echo "alias ipv6 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf
Then restart the computer.
If your internet is not still not lightning fast, then jib2 had a valid possibilty as well. You are using dsl, if I remember back when I used dsl I had to enter the dns servers manually. That would just be calling your isp, asking what the dns server addresses are and checking the /etc/resolv.conf file to see they match.
That's improved things considerably I am getting rendering speeds between 7 and 17 seconds which is a vast improvement. Not as fast as windows though, but I dont like windows so I can put up with this. One good thing though, all of the tweaks have improved my straight download speed, no end, turning my 1 meg broadband into 2.
