Screen Resolution

I have just re-installed Mandrake Linux 9.1. Before finishing the installation I forgot to change the screen resolution and I can't change it through the Mandrake Control Center as the Screen is so big I cannot see the buttons allong the bottom to save the changes.

Last Time I had this problem someone suggested pressing ctrlShift + or ctrlShirt - to change the Resolution and this seemed to work. This Time I cannot get this to work

Any Ideas I cannot live with 600*800 its horrible

Thanks

Flossie

Did you try editing your /etc/X11/XF86Config file?

Also, I believe Mandrake has "Xconfigurator", or "xf86cfg". You run both programs from the command prompt.

None of those are very user-friendly.

i recommend switching to console (hit ctrl-alt-f2), login as root, then type drakx11.

Choose resolution, select the new one you want, and choose "do," i think. then "quit," tell it to save your changes. hit alt-f7 to switch back to your X session, and restart X to get to the new resolution.

Note that in the console configuration program, you use arrow keys to choose from the list of options, then hit tab to choose one of the buttons below.

Tried using the drakx11 option as it sounded the simplest but I don't appear to have this installed on my system. How would I go about Installing this at a look at the CD's but I can't find this anywhere.

I tried some of the other options but couldn't work out what I was suppose to change.

Can any one shed some further light on the problem

Thanks

Xconfigurator re-configures your whole X windows system. It will take you step-by-step through everything. If you don't know what hardware is in your system, I would stay away from it.

ctrl + alt F2 (or boot into console)

su

cd /etc/X11/

XF86Config

A GUI should pop up like in the old DOS days and BAM! just configure it

Hi,
I tried what MICRO420 suggested above and tried to run /etc/X11/XF86Config However this file does not exist on my system. I do however have a /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file however this does not have execute permissions so I could not run it. Is this the same file as XF86Config and would it be safe enough for me to give it exectue permissions so that i can run it

Thanks

And the correct answer is.... in a console in root type in XFdrake exactly as typed with uppercase were shown. If this dosn't work then you don't have the drake utilities installed.
