well, there is a gui screen but i can't login to that for some reason. i select my login from a list, then type in my passwd. it waits a few minutes, goes to a blue screen with the x cursor, then goes back to the login screen. so i switch to one of the other consoles and i login there. so yeah, i login at the command prompt, not the gui.

try typing KDE load

if your computer goes right to the command line try typing KDE load. but if you are selecting your username in a gui by clicking on it. and entering your PW in a field below it there should be a dropdown menu below the PW field that lets you pick your gui. to follow the advice given by other users here you should pick KDE.

This is confusing. Can you login or not? You say in one of the posts that you login and get a blue screen with a clock and nothing else.

when do you see that blue screen with a clock? If it's a text login, you won't see any blue screens unless you manually start X with the command
startx

have you tried
startx /usr/bin/startkde
from the command line after text login?

It sounds like he dosn't have the correct permissions for his user account. This has happend to me when I upgraded or added a user to an already existing account directory. When you login it will log you right back out.

i don't know if this will work for you but...

this is what I did to fix a similar sounding problem with mandrake9.2 if you see something similar this may help.

while KDE is running

klick on the K in the lower left
click configuration
click configure your computer
enter your root password
click on boot
click on drakboot
check "launch graphical environment when your system starts"
click OK

To change or add a user to a group you can use webmin or the user manager in the Mandrake Control Center.
