Run rpm -ivh rpm file name to install the rpm. I will assume that it installed a kernel module. Try getting a file list from the rpm and look for .o or .o.gz files. Run "modprobe .o or .o.gz file" (without .o or .o.gz) to load the module into the kernel. Look in /dev for a new entry (I suggest "ls -R /dev >before" before running modprobe and "ls -R /dev >after" after running modprobe. Then "diff before after" will highlight any new entries) The new entry should be the device special file for your modem. Symlink this file to /dev/modem (ln -s file /dev/modem) and add a line

alias /dev/file modprobe'd file

to /etc/modules.conf. This should (hopefully) do the trick.

I have a conexant modem too
this is my modem setup process:
Install rpm modem driver by double clicking it or by typing
rpm hsf-linmodem-mdk9.1-i586.rpm (you file may have a name like this)
Once installed the rpm file, go to kppp and set the 'device' tab to /dev/modem and configure your dial number and account info. After this, just click connect.
Hope this works
