Question about programming

Just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop, and after I compile a program with gcc 3.2.2

My programs compile fine, but when trying to run the compiled program, I have to add a ./ then the program name.

Is this normal? I am asking this because on the linux machines at my local University (Running debian) all you have to do is just type in the compiled program's name.

Yes, that is normal. The directory you compiled it in isn't in the path. If it was, you wouldn't need the ./.
