Hi.

Im getting a new processor and motherboard on boxing day. But I need to know a few questions;

1. Which processor is best for Linux Mandrake 10.1 ???
2. On windows it ays my processor is AMD 64 but on Linux it says its AMD Duron. Why does it do that???
3. Do I got with P4, P4 HT, AMD 64 Athlon, AMD 64 Athlon FX, AMD Duron, AMD Athlon, AMD Athlon FX or other???
4. They have different programs for each processor like amd64 which one has the most compatibility???
5. Which one is fastest on Linux???
6. How can I tell if its a good one or not???
7. Is AMD 64 Athlon the best???
8. Can anyone give me more advice or more help???

Thank you for helping!!!

First of all, if I recall, you are not running the 64-bit edition of Mandrake. Therefore, it's not unreasonable that the OS says you have a different processor. (I could be totally wrong, but logic is kicking in here...)

As for the best processor, I believe any recent one will do the job. Intel or AMD is just personal preference. They both have the same architecture (excluding AMD64) so there aren't any compatibility issues.

If you do go with an AMD 64, get the 64-bit edition of Mandrake. Otherwise, any new processor will work fine with the regular 32-bit version.

Can I download the 10.1 communtity 64 bit one? Also is there a huge difference between the 64 bit processors and the 32. Because I was told that the 64 are alot better and faster.

Yes, there is quite a difference between the two. And yes, you can download the 64-bit community edition, but with official out, why bother?

Is the 64 bit processor better then the 32 bit ones? Also where can you download the official for 64 bit processors?

You can download at mandrake's FTP site...right where you can download the regular 32 bit version...did you even bother to check?

Better is an unquantifiable thing. It's personal preference. Generally if you buy a 64-bit processor, you take advantage of it and use a 64-bit operating system.

The AMD 64 is well regarding as one of the best processors in the world

WIntel P4 isnt in that list.

But the problem is Mandrake 10.1 'Official' isnt freely
available for download in x86-64
Don't bother with 10.1 community edition at all
try the 10.0 edition and run
urpmi --auto-select
to update everything to 10.1 levels

The only thing im worried about is if the distro will chang like urpmi and installing things will be a bit different. Will that happen? And I noticed with urpmi on 64 it only has one line to enter inwhile i596 has many. Thats what I mean stuff like that.

ok am i tired or did that not make any sense

what you mean urpmi has multiple lines?
urpmi name of software

you can still run 32bit (i586) software on a 64bit os if thats what you mean.
AMD64 packages are constantly increasing in support and popularity.

just as long as you dont use IA64 you'll be fine.

You're already confused as it is ddrfreak. I suggest you jump right into the 64-bit edition so that when/if you finally got a handle on the 32-bit OS and decide to switch to 64, you won't start another barrage of questions
