Exclamation Problems with PnP/ISA device recognition/configuration

I'm having problems figuring out how to install/configure my 2 PnP devices (soundcard & modem). Here's where I'm at so far.

1. Soundcard is described as a ESS1869 PnP Audio Drive in Win98 device manager. During M9.1 installation, the hardware configuration section said it couldn't install the sound card and to run "sndconfig" after install. Well, I finally figured out where that program was, how to install it, and how to run it. I ran sndconfig (I have no idea what this program did....) and now the soundcard seems to be working (I can play music and hear it through the speakers I have plugged into the soundcard) but it does not show up in HardDrake. I figured that since it's hardware, it should show up in HardDrake, but it doesn't. What's the deal here?

2. Modem is a US Robotics 33.6k Voice INT PnP (Win98 device manager description) running on COM3 in Windows (IRQ 5, if it matters). I ran the Network&Internet wizard from the M9.1 Control Center and was able to get the modem to detect using COM3 (just mimicing the Win98 config), but the wizard ultimately failed to configure (so it said). I used the KPPP dial-up tool and was able to connect to the internet alright (???), but the modem does not show up completely in HardDrake (modem is listed but with no info, just says modem....). Is that all I can expect, or did I miss something here?

Also, I have another general question related to the above questions. Do I have to try to mirror all of the Win98 device configurations (COM ports, IRQ #'s, etc...) in my Linux config as well? I'm running 2HD, dual boot with Win98 and M9.1. So far, everything else seems to run alright in M9.1 except the above devices, but I'm a noob, so I'm still trying to relate Linux procedures and configuration to what I already know in Windows. Anyone have simple explanation/answer to this question?

Lastly, why does mandrake install so many terminal/console programs (CRXvt, GBRXvt, GNOME terminal, JRXvt, Konsole, etc......) when the console is available from Mandrake Control Center? Do I actually need these....are they necessary...do they serve some sort of specialized purpose beyond the basic console available in MCC? Or can I uninstall all of them and do everything from the MCC console?

Thanks for the help....

Cory

I know that this is a fairly often-asked question, but somebody must be able to guide me through this process. I'm definitely a noob, but I can still follow directions. I've searched for posts regarding the setup of these items, but the responses are always different and talk about Linux-specific configuration processes that I'm just not familiar with.

I can follow instructions well, so I need someones help here please.

Thanks again.

Thanks
