I tried to install a copy of the full version of MATLAB on mandrake 10.1 and all my permissions seemed to be wonky, I couldn't for example execute the appropriate shell script file from the CD and so we had to copy it onto my hard drive. The first stage managed to work correctly but the license manager is causing trouble.

Mathworks have been a great help but the problem still seems to be with mandrake 10.1, I just wondered is a) anyone else had this problem b) How did they fix it and c) has anyone had problem with other offical software (other than downloadable stuff) with 10.1?

I think MDK mounts the CD "noexec" meaning you can't run any scripts or binaries from it.
Try mounting it manually like 'mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom -o exec'

After copying you should have run a 'chmod 755 -R *' in the directory to set the exec bit on all files.
