Problem with X server

After using Mandriva 2006 for about 2 weeks my X server refused to start because "cannot write to /tmp file or /tmp full". How can I empty /tmp or how can I avoid this thing in future ?

I tried rm -rf /tmp/* but didn't solve the problem. When I try to start X server retuns the same message "cannot write to /tmp or /tmp full".

so if your disk, where /tmp is mounted has enough space, try to control if the xserver has rights to write there. try chmod 777 /tmp

You sure you're logged in as root? Can you change to the directory and see what, if anything is in there? Perhaps you could try cd-ing to /tmp and removing the files in there individually? Have you tried rm -r and rm -f separately (i.e., rm -r /tmp and rm -f /tmp instead of using both arguments at the same time. Looking at the function of those commands, rm -rf doesn't look like proper format to me, looks more like they should be used individually, or like this: rm -r -f, although I'm not proficient with command line stuff)?

Yes, I'm logged in as root, I can see /tmp directory and I removed by hand all from /tmp, but didn't solve the problem... it says the same thing... I have to make a clean install.
