I am a newbie to Linux. I have download all 3 Mandrake 9.2 iso and burned to cds. But everytime when I install it, it never get to the "Root Password" and "Add a User" part, It when from "Install System" jumped to the "Install Boo9tloader" section. The system reboots after finished install. After the system reboot to the logion window, I do not have "User name" and "Password" to login.
I tried to burn another cd and re downloaded the iso files but same situation.
Please, and thanks for any possible help!!!
You can always try the Rescue mode.
- Boot from the 1st CD.
- Press F1 for Advanced Options
- Type: rescue.
- Select the "Go to console" option.
- Type: passwd
- Enter a password -- this password will be for the root user.
- To reboot, press Ctrl + Alt + Del
If you want to add a user (for example: coolko) before rebooting, you would do the following:
I did tried it from one of the threads. But after I typed the password and confirm it, it comes an error message. It's something like the user is not recognised.

After "Go to Console", I typed "passwd" at [root@rescue /]#.
The return was "bash: passwd: command not found"

You need to mount the filesystem and then chroot to root to add all of the commands to your path. You can do this by doing something like the following:
mount /dev/hda5 /mnt
chroot /mnt
now you would be able to use passwd without specifying the full path.
