No sound under X

I have an Audigy 2 sound card by creative. During boot up the sound card
makes a sound, so I presume the kernel loads the driver.
The following line is found in dmesg \"Audigy2 value:Special config\", which
again seems to indicate that the driver is loading.
The only sound like stuff shown by lsmod is this
\"snd_emu10k1 111556 2
snd_rawmidi 22688 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_seq_device 7952 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
snd_ac97_codec 88516 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_pcm 84748 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 21000 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 9360 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd_util_mem 4096 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_hwdep 8736 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_h
snd 48896 11 wdep
soundcore 8352 1 snd\"

The problem is that under X, there is no sound. Any ideas what I need to do
to get sound?

Thanx

Jim

Try to run mpalyer in a Virtual console to see if sound is available in console.
But, have you installed alsa or oss or something else ?

Errrmmmm

Alsa I think, but to be honest, I don't know how to check. I also don't know how to run something in a virtual console!!!
