new user needs help with Firefox 2 installation

Folks,

I managed to install Firefox 2 using Easy URPMI and got it to work first time. However, when I next started it, Firefox reverted to the previous version.

As I'm totally new to linux I've no idea how to go about fixing the problem so I'd be greatful for any assistance. Please assume that I'm a complete dummy and need to be told what to do in words of one syllable.

Bob

Normally mozilla-firefox binary (like a .exe for MS winxp) is installed in usr/bin.

Have a look in there and see if you have only one firefox file... there should be a config file too.

If you open the bin file with kate, and use line-numbers, go down to line 95. It should give you a

definite indication of the version. Like this.......95 moz_libdir=/usr/lib64/firefox-2.0

If you have more than one, you may need to uninstall the older ver.

Easiest way I know is the delete button, but that is a bit messy.

Try the "Configure_My_Computer" tool and go the software management.

Use the find installed software for removal, and type mozilla-firefox in the search bar.

You will need to re-install the 2nd ver after that to make sure you have everything in the right place.

Looks like your installer didn't work correctly. When I installed it, the package and files were overwritten by the new files.

But then again I usually download it to my home (user) dir (root) and install it with a double click of the mouse.

I'm sure there is a simpler way, and maybe some-one will let us know.

I hope this helps.

When I first dl'ed it, and untarred the package, I noticed it was already compiled and ready to run so I took a chance and dropped it into my Firefox 1.5 folder. I moved my plugins elsewhere temporarily to be safe, and as it happened I had to create a new desktop launcher but beyond that it worked. No, it's not a bit elegant.

Well it's a bit different with source files.

I wonder if it has the lib files in the source. (lib64mozilla-firefox2.0-2.0-2mdv2007.1.x86_64.rpm)

If it's all working, then thats fine.

Elegance? as long as it works and you don't have too much obsolete bits lying around.

Cheers.
