Mandriva ONE gotchas

Mandriva is a pretty good software, Mandriva One not so good. There are many gotchas. There are many servers that are not installed. SSH, SAMBA, NFS and other server. The problem is that I cant even share my resources.

Another gotcha is that the packages are not compliant so openssh is an earlier version and the problem is that openssh main is non compatible so you need to go to update.

Finally the firewall is all the way up and the problem with that is that even if you get the software the firewall block the NFS port.

Mandriva One is meant to be a stand alone trial distribution, or for people on the go that have access to systems that can't be reimaged. It isn't designed to be a server. That said, you might want to test the new 2007 alpha edition if you seriously need these features. Put in a feature request or bug sighting. Lastly, you could always get the latest production Mandriva, image a system the way you want it, and create your own live cd.

I agree but there from servers to servers, I think every desktop should have a samba-server because you might want to share a folder, also an openssh-server because most people use Linux drives on SSH.

The problem with Live Distro's are that they are tailored for the masses, not the individual. Since they are limited by the size of the medium (cd in this case), distributors have to pick and choose (and guess) what will most people will use.

The beauty of these is that they are linux based, which means that you can make your own live cd any way you want to. I read an article today on distrowatch.com (I think) which talks about the drakeLive tools used to create Mandriva one. This set of tools will be available in the 2007 release, and were reviewed as one of the best for making live cds.
