If you want to use lilo, then you can install it later (as long as you can boot from the floppy or however).
Sometimes the /etc/lilo.conf file gets labels that are too long and it fails. Just run 'lilo' to see the error. If it is the label, you need to edit the lilo.conf and reduce the label length. it is just the name, so you can change it to whatever you want. If it is the default image, you will have to change it in 2 places, one in the image section and one at the beginning in the default=... section.
Then rerun 'lilo' to write to the mbr.
If you are booting from knoppix or something, you have to chroot to the mount point so that it can figure out what to do.
