Hi all
I have been trying to get mandrake 8.2 to work on my pc. I have 2 hard drives the master has win xp and the other i am trying put linux on there.
I went through the install process, and it said it had installed and tried to reboot, thats when the problems began. I get right to the end of the startup screen and then all i get is peguins on the bottom half and nothing on the top. I thought i had done something wron so i did yet another clean install and the exact same thing happened.
My next plan was to try red hat, which i did and after installling it went through the same reboot and yes it happened again.
Ok i have an onboard video card which i disabled, and a pci radeon 7000 64 mb, during the install i opted to just configure the radeon. My monitor is a sony Hs73/l 17 flat panel
I am very new to linux, so if there is a simple answer to this i apologize, but i have been trying to do this for 2 days and it is driving me crazy.
Oh i tried to reboot and picked the failsafe option and im in text mode, but how can i edit and make sure that the graphics card is installed correctly. Is there an idiots guide out there to help me to do this.
Sounds like the installs in both Red Hat and Mdk 8.0 are having trouble with your Radeon and possibly the deactivated onboard video.
Which version of red hat?
I have 2 suggestions for you:
1 - Reinstall Mandrake but do not boot into graphical mode when it asks you if you want to (don't boot into X), that way, you can get into your system in console mode and try to fix things from there.
2 - See if you can try a newer distro, I find Mandrake 9.1 much MUCH more solid on the install than 8.0 was.
I was trying to install red hat 7.3 and mandrake 8.1.
With red hat i managed to get into X configuration, and it is seeing my onboard video and not the radeon, it does recognise my sony display. But when i try to change the resolutions it wont have any of it.
I am in the process of downloading mandrake 9.1 to see if that is a little nicer!! As soon as i get it installed i am sure i will be back with more questions.
No problem, I'm glad I CAN help. I've been using linux for a while, but I'm far from being more than an experienced newbie (still learning the hardcore stuff).
I've played with RedHat 7.3 on older machines (166-233) and I've always had trouble with X on it. Always.
As for Mandrake 9.1, it ROCKS...hopefully it will work as well for you as it has for me.
I use it on my laptop, on my desktop and on my fiancee's laptop (I've got her halfway converted to the penguin)
As for booting to a secondary drive..just make sure of a couple of things. First that LILO or GRUB knows where to find it. I know this sounds silly but I've had to hand code a few ...hdx..to hdb on occasion.
Also, beware! XP doesn't like dual booting. Always place LILO (or GRUB) in the boot sector then boot to the second drive.
