Question Mandrake 8.1 Kernel Panic ? ? ?

Hey guys... I'm looking for bigtime help. I'm a windows user who's been fooling with linux for a few years now. I bought a copy of Mandrake 8.1 to put on my brand new machine (a while back). My machine is a p4 1.8, 512mb DDR, blah blah blah.. plenty fast or whatever. I tried installing Mandrake alone and when installation is finished and I continue to boot mandrake, I get a kernel panic. The same happens when I dual boot with win2000 pro or winxp. Is my CPU too fast for 8.1? does anyone out there know what is going on? Any help would be appreciated![B]

I could, but not right now. I'm currently at work and I'd have to go home and start the re-installation process again. I will do this and be back on the forum by tomorrow if you can offer any support then. I will be trying to dual boot w/:

Intel Pentium 4 : 1800 MHz
Memory: 512 MB DDR
Storage: 80 GB Western Digital
OS: Windows 2000 professional.

I plan to (or have been trying to) dual boot Mandrake 8.1 (7 Cd set) and Win 2000 pro. I want to use approx. 50gb for windows partition and remaining 30 for Mandrake.

I heard from another source (reliable.. im not sure) that my processor is too fast and is causing the kernel panic? Is that just b/s? or could that possibly be true for 8.1? I thought it may be true because my CPU was purchased in early December 2002, when the P4 1.8 was first released. ANY HELP?? PLEASE SAVE MY SOUL!!!! I WANT TO RUN MANDRAKE!!!!!

yes thats just b/s. kernel panic means something (a file) was not where the kernel/system expected it to be when you started up.

Ok, I've tried the install again and it says in shortened terms:

CPU 0

Bad EIP value.

Kernel Panic. Attempted to kill init!
