Trying to upgrade 9.0 to 10.....boot from the first CD no problem, but within seconds after accepting the license agreement, the system freezes....mouse cursor won't move or anything. Rebooted to try again, this time it hung right after language selection. Third times the charm right....hung right after the license again.
P4 2.4 on an ECS P4VXASD2 motherboard.....nothing at all fancy and everything (except the USB wireless adapter) works fine under 9.0.
I have a Compaq that does the same thing, the only way I can install is to hit F1 at the CD boot and type linux no auto or expert no auto if you want expert features during the install. This will prevent it from attempting to detect your firewire/usb ports. If you try again with the standard boot method, try viewing the kernel messages so you can see where it hangs and locks the machine.
Tried linux no auto, same result.
I then tried using the text mode as opposed to the graphical mode to see if I could get any more info. To my surprise, I got past the language and license steps, selected upgrade 9.0, and saw the message that it was rebuilding the RPM database....I got excited.
Then came:
There was an error installing packages:
libreadline4-4.3-7mdk.i586
There was some text on the screen behind the error message...what I could see read:
perl:relocation error: /mnt/lib/libnss_compat.so.2:symbol _nss_files_parse_pwent, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
It asked me if I wanted to continue anyway, and I said no...but it continued anyway.
Then came
There was an error installing packages:
libbeecrypt6-3.1.0-2mdk.i586
the same perl message was visible below. It asked if I wanted to continue anyway and I said no...but it continued anyway. The same error message then came up, I said don't continue, it continued anway and the same error, etc. I finally had to reset to break out of the install.
Are they retail CD's? Whenever I've had messages saying "problem installing ..." it was a result of a bad CD that I burned from ISO's. Have you tried burning another CD? Try burning it at a slower speed also (8X, 12X).
They're ISO that I burned at 4x.....kept playing with it last night. I've noticed that whenever it hangs up, my mouse (microsoft optical usb) stays lit up. I proceeded a little further with the text based install, but it no longer asks me if I want to upgrade my 9.0 installation...it skips straight to partioning. When I say to use existing partitions, it gives me an error saying something like "oops, no root" Then it asks me which partitions I want to format....I'd prefer to upgrade vice a whole new install....this is starting to get annoying. 9.0 was the easiest install I've ever done...I thought 10 was supposed to be even better.
When you get to the partitioning, you don't have to repartition. All you need to do is edit the one that is your root ( / ) partition and designate that as the mount point. If you use a /home partition you'll have to do the same there. You have the option to format or not also. You will also have to point to which partition is your swap also.
The one constant that I noticed was that whenever the installation froze, the light on my mouse (microsoft blue optical usb) came on and stayed on. I couldn't find my USB to PS/2 adapter (I think my kids planted it in the garden) so I swapped in an old PS/2 mouse and shazam...the graphical installation went off without a hitch. Then I powered off, swapped the USB mouse back in and rebooted...things worked and I was pumped, until I tried to log off.....froze on a black screen with the x cursor. Guess I'll have to find the USB to PS/2 adapter.....
