Mandrake 10.1 takes 5 mins to log in

For some reason mandrake 10.1 takes about 5mins to log in, I have dowlloaded a copy from the site so I don't have all the drivers but none the less it still should work and it shouldn't take 5 mins to get in!!

When I log in I have a choice of what I log into, I have linux, linux smp, 267-3 (i think) and some other stuff. When I log into linux straight I can't get a GUI, I just get the text. Only when I log into 267-3 do I get a GUI and that takes about 5 mins.

Whats going on?

Mat

If you're talking about the time from a boot or reboot, 5 minutes doesn't sound so out of line. It takes about four minutes on my system for Mdk 10.1 to get to where I login. The actual login only takes a split second.

You can install Mandrake Linux so that it will take you straightaway to a graphic interface login. You have to specify that (it's just about the last step in the installation) at installing time. You can change it later (now) by means of the Mandrake Control Center. Go into the Control Center and choose System > Boot > AutoLogin. Check the box that tells Mandrake to go to a graphical login.

When you boot into option that brings you to a GUI, the one that takes so long, can you see the detailed info, or is is just a progress bar? If it's just a progress bar, then hit the esc key to see detailed boot messages. Sounds like your getting stuck on something. You'll be able to see whether it fails or not in the detialed view.

Let us know,
Jeremy

Excellent. I should have said that in my response.

And if you find that there's a hangup somewhere along the way, you can temporarily speed things up by
pressing the "i" key when prompted during boot (verbose mode as described by jerm1701) and entering
interactive mode, which allows you to say "y" or "n" to every action as it is proposed. If the item causing
the hangup isn't a major thing you need at the time, you can just bypass it that way. That's how I bypassed
loading sendmail, for example, until I was able to get a problem with it fixed.

Every successive version of MandrakeLinux since 8.0 has required longer to boot, in my experience. It just
gets more and more complex and takes longer. Version 8 booted in less than a minute and a half. Now 10.1
takes at least four minutes on my machine with a very modest Pentium III 560 MHz processor. I don't load
all that many functions, either. If you're running a whole lot of complex stuff every time, I can see how it
might easily take five minutes.

Ok, here's where I prove once again my memory and perceptions are far from perfect.

Three am and I couldn't sleep (high winds in our city, causing lots of positive ionization, and I've been
weather-sensitive all my long life). So I got up and decided to time how long it took from switching the
power on to the computer, to the point where I was able to go about my normal business on it.

It took:

(1) 1 minute and 46 seconds from power-on to the (command-line) login screen.

(2) 3 minutes and one second from power-on to all ready to go, with JPilot, Thunderbird, Firefox, gkrellm, Xterm,
and two OpenOffice.org documents open, all running under IceWM.

What can I say...
