Mandrake 10.1 Internet Troubles

I wasn't able to get the internet up and running on Mandrake 10.0 so I installed 10.1 thinking maybe it would work... Apparantly the eth0 interface fails on boot. I've ran the auto configuration tons of times but it never connects me to the internet. I'm running on a Lan connection (University Line) and I know that its not my hardware as another version of Linux (namely PHLAK) detected my internet connection as soon as it started up and configured it by itself. Soooo... I just wanted to know from all you grizzled veterans of Mandrake, what should I do? I'm probably going to try another clean install and maybe tweak the settings around (even though I've done every possible combination including trying static when my IP config should be through DHCP)... If I can't get the internet working on Mandrake I'm probably going to switch to Suse or some other distro because I really need the internet to get the full effect of Linux.

Please provide the setups you have done so far and the specs of the nic card and mobo.

Alrighty... I just went into the configure internet... Removed all connections.. Add connection-> LAN-> let it detect eth0 automatically-> DHCP ->Blank-> Blank->Blank Restart Mandrake.... Then I've tried putting in my hostname that I use for Windows XP... tried putting in my DNS servers as hostname... I've tried a few moderations of it... Tried connecting and it was a no go. Okay enough elipses. I have a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (and thats exactly what mandrake tells me it detects. It says eth0 RLT8139 or something similar). I'm running a Soyo Dragon Lite motherboard with a sort of outdated BIOS (but I have no floppy drive so I cant upgrade it). Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800XT, yadda yadda.

Ok realtek is a common nic card and mandrake does support it. Make sure the mod is loaded by looking at lsmod.

Second dns is IP only. A hostname will not work.
Of course thats IP's only in the /etc/resolv.conf in the format "nameserver IP"

Third make sure the internet is being started at boot.

Forth paste your dhcp.conf here for me.

Okay I'm pretty much a Linux noob so this is going to be harder than I thought. On boot it says its bringing up eth0 interface ... waits for like a minute or two then it says FAILED... In other news heres my lsmod:

I might also add that I clean installed Mandrake again tried to just let it config my internet for me but that failed. And for some reason after I run console Konquerer stops working... It just says "starting home" or whatever and then just stops... After finally reinstalling mandrake and getting my cruzer mini mounted I guess I can say I'm done for today... I don't understand why it doesn't just automatically detect it like Knoppix. I put in Knoppix I was up and running in no time... Weird stuff. If you can get this working for me you're my linux god.

Are you sure this is a Realtek RTL8139 nic ?

dhcp.conf is located in /etc/dhcp/

You can find almost everything using "locate what-ever" or "whereis what-ever"

You can also "tail -f -n 100 /var/log/syslog" after boot to see what there error its throwing and network boot.
You can also watch in real-time by doing "/etc/init.d/network start" and watch the syslog.

Hi
Could you please help me? I have the same problem as mentioned by NeMeSiS187. The difference is that I have SIS900 network card. It is supposed to be working well
on Mandrake 10.1 but not on my computer. I'm perfectly sure that there is signal in the internet cable, but after running whole internet access configuration it still doesn't work.
I have my IP received automatically from DHCP. The interface eth0 initialization fails every time I start up my linux, but as far as I know it often happens but doesn't
affect the network working. Please tell me which logs I should post so there will be any chance of discovering the problem. Please forgive me my language
- english ain't my primary language.
Thank you in advance
Magda

Well I went out and got me fedora core 3... So far I'm liking it much better than mandrake but the only problem is it doesn't let me access my ntfs partition so I gotta get that worked out. Other than that its all good, internet works, devices detected. A guy upstairs got mandrake 10.1 working and the internet auto configed itself like it should... but his printer didn't get detected no matter what he did... So I guess it varies from computer to computer.

Hey, I don't know how much help I'm going to be, but I have Mandrake 10.1 with a wireless card in my desktop. But I don't think the eth0 failing at startup has much to do with it. (Keep in mind I could be wrong about that). But I get that every time I start up. It says "FAILED" every time. And my internet works fine.

Sometimes, when I startup, the internet isn't working. So I do the following:

- I go to the Mandrake Control Center and then to Network Options. I'm not on my mandrake box right now so the names ("network options") might be a little off.
- From there I click on "remove connection" and remove the eth0
- Then I go to "add connection" and select my connection type and just keep hitting "next" until it's done staying with the default settings.
- Then I go to "monitor connections"
- In the bottom left corner of that screen, I click a "connect" button.
- A little indicator just above the button says "connected" or "not connected". Usually after I click the "connect" button, the indicator will say "connected". I takes a few seconds.

And that always works. Sometimes not the first time. So then I'll just remove it again and go through the process again. If after the third time, it's still not working, then it's obviously not the problem.

I don't know if that will help but it's what works for me. One thing about Linux is no two problems are the same. Hope it helps.

Thanks, I'll try that. Maybe it will work. I did that before (remove connection, set up new one), but I didn't exactly ask for connection that many times.
One more thing that should be remarkable. After ifconfig I get the message that The network is down. Maybe this will help us to find the solution.
