Mandrake 10.1 and PC Speaker

I don't know if it just my version of Mandrake 10.1 CE, or if it cuts across the whole release, but I have always been bothered by the fact that my PC's speaker didn't work. My sound card worked just fine, but the actual internal PC speaker, the one that makes those annoying beeps, didn't. Hence, xterm/console based programs that beep at you to indicate an error were always very, very silent.

Today, after 9 months or so of using Mandrake, I have found the solution, and would like to share it with you good folks, in the hopes that it may help a few other people have a more complete (or more annoying, depending on your point of view!) computing experience.

To enable the PC speaker, you have to load kernel module "pcspkr". It is that simple. Simply embed:

modprobe pcspkr

somewhere convenient in the start up scripts, such as /etc/rc.local, and your computer will be beeping away from now on.

Now why didn't Mandrake do that to start with?? This is a pretty basic item to leave out!

Well, with mine I don't need the PC spkr. My beeps for the terminal and errors are sent through the sound card.

echo -en "\007"
