Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 and Kernel Sources

I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 web cam, and use the new Saillard pwc driver for it. This driver has to be compiled against the kernel sources to create the needed kernel module. It is VERY sensitive to being compiled against the kernel source that EXACTLY matches the running kernel. In the case of Mandrake 10.1 CE, I am running kernel 2.6.8.1-10, but have been provided source for 2.6.8.1-12. I compiled pwc against this, but it moans and complains and won't load when I plug in the webcam. I can force it in with "modprobe -f pwc", but this is annoying at best.

Can anyone steer me to the kernel-source package for the 10.1 CE kernel 2.6.8.1-10? I checked via the Mandrake Control Center Software Install stuff, but it doesn't have this version of kernel-source. Thanks!

As for all users of CE: Upgrade to OE if possible. You get a supported system with bug and security fixes.

If you installed CE from CD you should be able to find the source to 2.6.8.1-10 on one of those.

If not you could perhaps hack your kernel version to fool the pwc build system.
Edit /usr/src/<your kernel tree>/include/linux/version.h and change the UTS_RELEASE to 2.6.8.1-10mdk
(I assume it says 2.6.8.1-12mdk now). You might have to change the top level Makefile as well. If so
modify EXTRAVERSION to 10mdk .

its probably complaining that its going to taint the kernel because it isnt a GPL License module.

Thanks for the tip of "hacking" the kernel sources. That did the trick. I made the indicated changes, rebuilt the Saillard pwc driver and voila! it now loads automatically when I plug the webcam in. Thanks!!! This is excellent.
