i haven't faced this typre of problem while working with other LINUX distros all these years!!
the problem is
the login manager it is using is not allowng me to go to gui mode with "root"
it just presents an option to chose from a list of users except root
what i can do is start "GDM" from another session and then use root to go to GUI mode
by default i am not allowed this
so how so i go about changing the login manager from its default login namager to gdm ??
i also try putting up an entry in /etc/inittab but of no use...
With the same KDE version installed and the same apps and services running, you would not see an appreciable difference between the two.
However Mandrake does require a bit of tuning out of the box, so to speak.
For instance the FIRST thing you should do is...
edit /etc/sysconfig/harddisks
and UNCOMMENT all of the indicated lines.
Then in /etc/lilo.conf add the word
COMPACT
towards the top and run
lilo
while logged in as root.
The first tweak speeds up hard disk access an great deal and makes Mandrake "smoother". The second tweak causes the kernel to load up almost instantly.
You don't even see the initial kernel loading bar move by because it becomes so fast this way. The services will also load faster (the second moving bar) because of the first tweak.
After installing KDM with urpmi or MCC, , you can choose which Display Manager will run in MCC. This will handle the file editing and avoid typos
Open the KDE menu / System / Configuration / Configure Your Computer
Select 'System' in the left menu bar, then the 'Display Manager' icon in the main pane.
