L 99 99 99...

I installed Mandrake 9.2, and when I rebooted all I get is - L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 .... . What could be the cause of this? Everything I searched for on the internet has to do with using windows along with mandrake, but I removed windows. Has anyone had this problem?? I have tried LILO and GRUB, nothing worked.

Looks like a boot error, but truthfully my first thought is that your keys are sticking...

Did you run a search of these forums? Take a look at this thread.

You mention you already tired your boot loader... but that sure looks like the culprit.

Also, you might be able to draw more responses in the future with more informative subject lines...

Has nothing to do with windows or mandrake. It's the bootloader. Lilo somehow isn't set up right, so when your system boots, the bios and the little bit of lilo that loads shoots back this annoying response. It's supposed to be helpful, but that's in the eye of the beholder. To fix it, you typically 'chroot' (change root) to the Lilo drive from another disk (knoppix is good for this kind of thing), then adjust and reinstall Lilo. I've had this happen a few different times, each with a different (dumb) reason, so it can be a little tough to troubleshoot from afar. The main thing is, once you fix a problem like this, you're ahead of most people that use Linux. If nothing else, that edge is a nice ego boost. Another technique (simpler) would be to use your install cd as a "rescue" disk. There should be help and options for booting a messed up system on them.

Oh, and I did have this happen when Lilo expected a floppy boot, and got an MBR boot instead. Haven't quite sorted that one out yet, but after installing the MBR (using the knoppix chroot), it worked fine. That was w/MS Windows 2000, by the way.

Problem fixed...

I didnt have my BIOS set up correctly to read the first 1204 (something like that) sectors. It was looking at the drive as a whole and like it still was partioned by windows. All I had to do was select LBA as the startup point for my main drive, and it worked. Such a simple thing like that was overlooked and caused a whole pile of stress.

Thanks to both of you for your efforts.

I'm having the same problem that MattOlz was having ("L 99 99 99 ... ") but I've tried with my drive set to both lba and normal, nothing works.

Using CD 1 as a rescue disk just lets me switch between the Lilo bootloader ("L 99 99 99 99") and restoring the Windows MBR (no Linux).

Scott_R, I have no idea how to go about re-installing Lilo.

Paul
