Last night I booted Mandriva and was confronted by a non functioning keyboard: It worked OK while entering my user name and password but once the GUI appeared the keyboard nolonger worked. Initially; I thought that it might be a hardware problem but switching over to Windows XP proved that to be false.
I can use the keyboard under Safe Mode but have no idea as to where to go fro, here.
JolPhil,
Many thanks for your quick response. I have exactly the same settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it still does not work:
I logged in later using ICEWM and the keyboard functions as normal. So, it seems to be a problem within KDE.
I assume that it is a missing link between the kernal and KDE. B ut how to remedy the situation is beyond me at the moment.
OK,
Not being an expert here's what I would try..
ctrl-alt-F3 to go to a login screen..
Log in (you may have to be root) su root password
type mcc to enter the Mandriva control center...
select keyboard and re-set to the proper keyboard parameters and save
the results..You may have to reboot Shutdown -r now
If that does not help you need a real expert to help you..
goodluck,
jolphil
JolPhil,
Here is what I did.
I gave up on trying to solve the problem with the non functioning keyboard in 2008.0 and installed 2008.1 instead. Of course I backed up my software with K3b to DVDs and discovered that they were ALL corrupted on trying to copy back.
Now for a problem with a non responding Wifi.
Many thanks for your advice , even though it did not work.
Wow,
Sorry to hear you had so much trouble..I did go to another linux forum where you posted and noticed your Xorg.conf section had the fr keyboard instead of the us keyboard..I did not know from your profile whether you are in France or the US..However that makes no difference now anyway as you went to 2008.1 version..
I cannot understand why all your saved data on the DVD's were corrupted..Did you save them as "Data" and close the media? I have found K3b to be a excellent burner program..
Hope 2008.1 works out for you
jolphil
Edit
PS: try posting your WiFi problems in the Network/Wireless forum.
You may get more specific help there..
jolphil, Many thanks for the reply. Yes! I am in France and was using my wife's keyboard - she's French btw. Mandriva 2008.1 installed quickly once I had sorted out the partitions and having a keyboard actually working again was more than satisfying.
As regards K3b, like you I have never had a problem with it writing either DVDs or CDs. The DVDs were brand new and still wrapped (IMATION) and this brand has worked well before. So, just like you I was amazed to find corrupted disks. I even went as far as to download DVD rescue software (WinXP) which worked away for hours all to no avail.
Mandriva 2001.1 is very nice to look at and easy to use (isn't all Mandriva stuff?) but it has one major failing. It uses PulseAudio - no bad thing - which will not work with SKYPE. Living in France and with family members everywhere I will have to return to Mandriva 2008.0.
