Kernel 2.6 dual boot

For to upgrade to kernel2.6 you need to upgrade some packages. Is this packages backwards compatible with kernel2.4? e.g. If I install this packages over (rpm -e --nodeps package; rpm -i --nodeps package), will the old setup work?

You don't need to drop old kernel to install a new one.
As an example, I use 3 different ones by means of a startup menu.
You just have to take care.

For the 2.6 kernel you'll need new module tools. You can have both the new and old versions of the module tools as the name is different "module-init-tools". I haven't done this on Mandrake but on Debian I have both kernels installed and running.

Look in the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes for the requirements.

Yes it works in Mandrake.
The package blixblix mentions is necesary (al least for modules to work). Search and download module-init-tools-0.9.9-1mdk
