Is upgrading irreversible?

Hi.

On my 40 Gigabyte hard disk I used to have two partitions:
one for Windows 98 (30 GB) and the other with Mandrake 9.1 (10 GB).
Now I created a third partition taking off another 10 GB from Windows,
in which I successfully installed Mdk 10.1 Community Edition.
Only, because I didn't know yet how to properly install a new OS in a new partition,
I did something wrong and after the installation of Mdk 10.1 in the new partition,
Mdk 9.1 in the old partition turned to have been upgraded to 10.1,
without I had wanted that: also the kernel changed from 2.4.21-0.13mdk to 2.6.8.1-10mdk.

Would it be possible (and how?) to have my old Mdk 9.1 back,
included the old kernel?

Thanks,
Rodolfo

firstly community is a BETA version of Mandrake and not recommended for normal use

when you updated from 9.1 to 10
the 2.4 kernel options usually would have been added to lilo or grub

KDE>system>configuration>Configure your computer">boot>set 2.4 as default if it is there.

if it isnt there run Install software from the KDE>>system>configure>configure my computer">software>Install Software

search for kernel and at least one version of 2.4 kernel should appear install it and then repeart the first step to set it as default or just chose it from menu each boot

Thanks.
I did as you suggested:
KDE>system>configuration>Configure your computer">boot>set 2.4 as default (it was there),
then I reboot, but still the command 'uname -r' showed the 10.1 kernel: 2.6.8.1-10mdk.

Any other hint?

Rodolfo

When you installed did you create two / partitions? If so Mandrake would look and find the Mandrake installation that already existed. What you have to do when you add another distro or version is make the partition for the existing distro something like /mnt/mandrake. You would do this by selecting advanced and partition and rename it at that time. When when you create / for your new version it will install it there. It is confusing when you start more than one distro or version of a distro. I have three distros installed and to give you an example in Gentoo I have / /home and one /swap and /mnt/mandrake /mnt/mandrake/home and /mnt/slack. In Mandrake I have / /home /mnt/gentoo and /mnt/slack and so on. I hope that's not too confusing. Personally I would reinstall 9.1 and rename my other partitions so you won't run into the same problem again. Then you'll have to manually add your entries into lilo or grub.

did you look at ALT+CTRL+F6
what kernel version does it say at the top screen
CTRL+ALT+f7 to get back to KDE if you get lost

(uname may show the version of Mandrake not the kernel your currently using)

If still nowhere to be seen In that case because i'm no expert so i can't guide you to edit Lilo confidently

so just try the second half of the post (Install the 2.4 mdk kernel rpm)

**if not found
make sure you have Mandrake Update setup (where you get all the latest patches) Kde>system>configuration>packages>Mandrake Update''

now get back to into a Konsole or terminal and make yourself root
#urmpi kernel-2.4
it'll list available packages with that name

install them
#urpmi kernel-2.4 -i

note urpmi is a very handy too it was the only way i could get java to install
#urmpi j2re

hows about you reinstall mandrake 10.1
and replace 9.2 or
just run the 9.2 setup again and choose UPGRADE this will rebuild the lilo table to be 9.2 and boot 9.2

i'd personallly download 10.1 official reboot chuck it in the cdrom "select install mandrake" at the disk drake "USE EXISTING partitions"

*on the choose which to format
tick root /

dont tick /home/ if you want to keep all your KDE and software settings.
