Is Mandriva the right choice?

I'm considering migrating my rh8 server to mandrake.

This is my sever specks:

Intel Server Motherboard SE7500CW2
Dual Xeon 1.8 Ghz P4
1050 Gb Ram
2 HDD 80 Gb

is this the proper hardware for the recent version? And is this the proper one:
Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD1,2,3.i586?

Sorry for this, but all the mandrake.com and so are "under construction" and i just can't find the proper info, and my last linux instalation with rh8 was though and hard, with that specks.

Thanks in advance and regards

it'll work fine, but i'd suggest a more server orientated distro though, like Centos.

mandriva.com and mandrivalinux.com are the right websites for Mandriva (Mandrake Linux).

Mandrake is a good alternative if you want to set up a server and use a graphical environment. Just read a lot about security

If you wan't a command line only server, then many Mandrake's advantages wouldn't be present, so I would recommend something like debian or slackware.

Yes, the 3 CD set is the correct thing to download.

I would recommend evaluating the Mandriva Corporate Server 3 (CS3) http://www.mandriva.com/business/corporate-server based on the hardware that you are selecting and the length of time that you have had RH8 deployed. The CS3 will give you a commerically supported distribution with a five year supported life.

Mandriva offers command line or graphical tools for server configuration. Experienced system administrators generally use the command line while Windows system administrators, that are new to Linux, use the graphical interface to gain familiarity with Linux. Mandriva offers both command line and graphical tools, but use the tool that is best for you.

With CS3, Mandriva provides one year of unlimited web support and one month of unlimited telephone support. You may never need the support, but if you do, you have a dedicated, experienced technical resource that is there to help you answer your question. If you have ever spent 4 or more hours struggling with an issue or trying to find an answer with Google, you will quickly find that having the commercial support is a very efficient service, and one of the benefits of the commercially supported versions of Linux.

PRODUCT SUPPORTED LIFE - MANDRIVA
http://www.mandriva.com/security/productlifetime

Corporate Server 3 - Supported until December 2009
10.1 - Supported until February 2006
LE2005 - Supported until April 2006

The Limited Edition 2005 (LE2005) will not have any updates after April 2006. If you plan to upgrade the server before April 2006, then LE2005 may be a great option. If having a Mandriva OS that is supported beyond that time, you may want to evaluate, CS3 or wait for Mandriva 2006 which will be released in October 2005.

DISCOUNTS
Mandriva has several discount programs including PSMP (http://www.mandriva.com/toprint/partners/psmp.pdf). In quantities as small as five, the cost per server drops to $179, and includes unlimited web support, and automated updates through MandrivaOnline.com. Since you are migrating from RH8, it appears that stability and longevity may be part of your goals. With the Mandriva Corporate Server 3 you will be assured of updates until December 2009, corporate server web support through http://www.mandrivaexpert.com and automated updates through http://www.mandrivaonline.com.

thank you all for you're reply and i'm so sorry for the late reply. Long weekend here (with a holiday day also).

1st of all let me say that i'm a windows system administrador, so the graphical enviroment can be handy, but i'm ready to learn and move on to whatever i need to work.

There's another issue, i was under the impression that mandriva was free. Is this right?

wpennington, thanks for you're complete response, most impressive. But although those values are very low, cost is a issue here and things are dificult in this part of the world.

There is the free download version (You may notice that the links in my previous post were to download the operating system) and the paid version. The advantages of the paid version include: Support and closed source drivers and more. I would pay for support if I intended to use Mandriva on a business critical server where a halt may cause loss of money.

Mandriva is also open source.

Where are you from?

I downloaded that version (the free one) never the less. I'm in Portugal.

Edit:

Mandrake is a good alternative if you want to set up a server and use a graphical environment. Just read a lot about security
Why this? Any security issue with mandriva?

No. This is was a general hint. You still have to learn about security whatever is the os your are using as a server.

Just a note on that - the author of that HOWTO seems to think that you need to install apt to have a proper package management system on Mandrake. This is not true - Mandrake/Mandriva has had urpmi for years now and its as good as, if not better than apt. So you can just skip the section about installing apt and use urpmi (or even the GUI software installer in the Mandrake Control Centre) to install stuff.

Using urpmi means you can use any of the repositories available for Mandrake - make sure you go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org so you can access the full set of software. However keep in mind that only the packages that come out of the 'main' repository will have regular security updates provided by Mandrake/Mandriva - something you should keep in mind if you're running a server.
