I installed Mandriva 2007 free on my computer, works fine but I cant connect to the internet with my DSL modem.
I used Mandrake 8 before and had no problem connecting to the internet, Mandriva 2007 does not seem so user friendly to as Mandrake 8 to me.
My Service provider gives very little info, I have no idea if it is TCP/IP or PPPOE or what I should use.
Calling them is useless because the moment they hear you are not using Windows they tell you they cant support it.
Well I have given up, I have tried every option they gave me but it wont connect to the internet.
Now I do see things happening when I click on Monitor connections, the little bars are moving and bites are send and received but when I try and open up a webpage it tells me I am not connected ???

Does the interface used for your internet connect get brought up during boot? Does this connection need dhcp enabled, if so, is it? If your firewall, iptables, or shorewall settings are incorrect that can stop a system from connecting. Before you go and say it is Mandriva's fault you should check these things.

I have no idea if it is brought up during boot, what I do know is that it takes ages too boot Mandriva, it gets to a point and then get stuck there for like 5 min before I get the log on screen.
When I go to "configure computer" and check for the internet it says it is not connected, I then press on connect and it then tells me unable to connect and I need to check my settings
I do not think my firewall is set up yet since i did not do it.
I am having exactly the same problem under Mandriva 2007, using an ADSL modem (Thomson Speedtouch) through the ethernet port.
I tried DHCP protocole with no success, as well as PPPoE (with the DNS IP adress of my provider - PRIMUS in Canada, which says they do not support Linux).
I tried the PING command from a console, but it does not connect to the IP address.
I am desperate to solve this problem.

(1) at boot up watch the screen and when the boot options come up change the boot to VGA=normal , this should then give you a verbose output of where its at and what its doing. Get this first.
(2)I would suspect at boot its trying to connect to your network card (ethernet port -Eth0)and you are being forced to wait because the time out is set to 300 seconds or something longer. This will probably go away when you get your network card set up. Go into the mandrake control center as root and set it up with the values given to you by your ISP ,
(3) A basic strong firewall is installed on installation

Any help will be great, thanks
