Installing software from a CD ???

Hi there,

My main question is how do I install software from a CD?

The CD is not part of the Mandrake 10.1 series of CDs.

Do I need to "Add a medium?"

And, if so, is it a local file or a removable device?

And so on and so on and so on

Anyone care to lend some assistance?

G'day,

I'm trying to install 'Gambas' on my computer which has Mandrake 10.1 on it.

Since posting I've managed to copy it from a Suse 10.1 DVD to the desktop.

The file is 'gambas-1.9.23-13.i586.rpm'.

When I right click on the Gambas file, I can click on the 'Software installer'.

When I do, it says...

You are about to install the following software package on your computer:
/home/lxusr/Desktop/gambas-1.9.23-13.i586.rpm
You may prefer to just save it. What is your choice?

The choices are 'Install it' and 'Save file'.

I clicked on 'Install it' but nothing seems to happen.

Any thoughts?

try the rpm in shell

open a shell up and cd to your desktop

rpm -i gambas-1.9.23-13.i586.rpm

It will probable return an link error

could you not get it from the mandrake package manager?

Okay...

Quote:

I did the following...

1) Opened the Software Packages Installation program.
2) Selected 'All packages, alphabetical'.
2) Typed '*.rpm' and clicked the 'Search' button.

And the result?

"Search results (none)"

Great

Quote:
try the rpm in shell
I'll give it a try (I'm not a shell type of guy).

Why is this so hard?

You know I'd like to get on the Linux bandwagon...

But it's hard when the wheels haven't been attached.

in package manager search for gambas not rpms

If this does not work look up for a gambas rpm repository and add this to your software manager, you can trawl the internet for a repositry and then somewhere in your software manager you should see the add repository.

hope this helps

i am only a shell kind of guy

I managed to work out how to -

Oh, what the hell, here's the message that came up.

warning" gambas-1.9.23-13.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 9c800aca
error: Failed dependencies:
libmysqlclient.so.15 is needed by gambas-1.9.23-13
libsqlite.so.0 is needed by gambas-1.9.23-13

If these two programs are needed by Gambas, why aren't they included with Gambas?

As for the "If this does not work look up for a gambas rpm repository and add this to your software manager etc"

Are you suggesting that I surf the net using Linux?

That, my dear friend, would be an absolute miracle!

look man, you are trying to install a package from another distro. you are making this hard on yourself. in linux programs depend on each other. it saves disk space and makes things easier on the developers. this is why package managers exist they resolve the dependency issues by installing everything you need to run the app you want. your's doesn't work because you can't get online. if you address this problem first it would make things much simpler. if you need to do this without internet (I assume you have a shitty windows box sitting around somewhere) find an rpm site like http://rpm.pbone.net/ and get the package for your distro and the packages it depends on (and quite possibly some more that they depend on etc.) put them on a cd and use 'rpm -i' to install them.

Why can't you get online with linux?
