How to boot into rescue mode with 2.4 (alt1)

I have a computer I'm trying to load Mandrake 10 on, but it will only recognize the CD-ROM with the 2.4 kernel. I need to boot into rescue mode and also specify alt1, but can't figure out how to do this. Any help is appreciated.

P.S. - I figured out the above problem right after posting this (type: alt1 rescue) instead of rescue alt1.

I'm still having a problem though:

I'm trying to install mandrake 10 on a compaq proliant 3000 server with a RAID 5 array (which is seen as the primary boot device) and I've installed an IDE drive to boot from (I want the max RAID space available for data), but this system can't be setup to see the IDE to boot from. I've tried both bootloaders (LILO and Grub), and sometimes it tries to boot and shows "99 99 99 99..." on the screen or nothing. I've tried installing the boot loader to the MBR or the root, with no luck.

How should I set this up to get it to work?

TIA
