Unhappy here's a dumb question but...

what do i need to do to install .bin files tried just about everything, preaty mutch got a handle of installing rpm files (though sometimes they install and won't run like real player still trying to figure out how i messed that one up) but for the most part installing from any other file ext seems to work great but the .bin

any help on this would be greatly appretiated tried finding the answer on the net and in the forum but can't seem to find it plus any links to mandriva user manuals tips and tricks or any other mandriva related info for newbies would be great.

here is an example off the error i get

The filename "installer_kbasic_personal_linux.bin" indicates that this file is of type "unknown". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "executable". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.

Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "executable", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file.

or just
Code:

yeah, check the permission first:
Code:
ls -la installer_kbasic_personal_linux.bin
Of course this and the other command I posted you require you to be in the same directory with the file

When you download a .bin it can lose it's execute atribute (I think thats the best way to articulate it), so you need to reset it as an executable file (chmod a+x).

short answer... Yes,

I told you to check the permissions.
In ls -la the first field probably was:
-rw-r--r-- which means you don't have execute permission.

chmod a+x would turn the permission to:
-rwxr-xr-x which means giving to all the users execute permission
