You have wine for cedega installed?

You seem like an old hand with cedega, I haven't played 3d games on mine for a while.

It seems like you're dropped into a shell, but there's no conection to the next stage.

I do remember that when I used the Menu Style Selector, I had the window frame problem.

I haven't used it for a while. (all good)

(edit) I read the readme's with Cedega thinking I'd have to update Wine. No. Cedega IS Wine. (end edit)

I alway swore that when I could play my favourite games on Linux that Windows would be gone from my system forever. So when I was installing 2007 for the first time on Wednesday I saw the add in the splash screen and got really excited.

After installation it was the very first thing I opened, it popped up a window telling me how to subscribe, I clicked the cancel button on that and the cedega program opened. There was an icon in one panel for FlatOut and I clicked on it and the game opened just like any game in Windows does.

I clicked on Time Trial, chose a boxy looking muscle car and a random track and played three laps. Unfortunately it hasn't opened for me since but I WANT IT - I WANT IT - IWANT IT!

Full screen 3D with good frame rate and full hardware accelerated surround sound. This is what I've been waiting for for so many years now.

No, first time I'd ever heard of it. Worse - I got to play it once and now it's gone! Why do I get the feeling that there's some linux guru reading this and giggling his tits off at me? I will get it back.

Could we be seeing the begginnings of a pattern here maybe?

I'll play with this some more over the weekend and keep you up to date.

Maybe the cedega time-trial was a one-time only.

When you uninstall Cedega, check the /etc directory for /etc/cedegarc. or perhaps /etc/.cedegarc

Files that end with rc are also configuration files. Do not get too carried away with removing them other than when you uninstall the associated program as they are not automatically rebuilt. I use fetchmail here to get my email from the WEB, and procmail to filter it each quarter hour. ~/.fetchmailrc was created when I ran fetchmailconf to set it up, and I had to create ~/.procmailrc to program the filtering as I wanted.

When I got up this morning I decided I was going to spend the whole day sorting this out. First thing I did was start up as the user that had all of it's config files deleted. Everything was working well except for Cedega. I deliberately played with the Menu Style Selector then opened MCC and clicked on Install Packages. My harddrive light came on fully but I couldn't hear any activity and the whole system was locked up - no keyboard, no mouse, no control left whatsoever.

After about ten minutes of this I decided that I had no choice and hit the emergency button - that little one that's just under the power button.

Linux tends to get a little upset when you do this to a journalised file system but fair's fair, it upset me first!

After many repairs to root system and getting back to my user again I thought "What are you doing, you stupid old fart?" then I inserted the Mandriva 2006 disk and hit the emergency button again!

I formatted all linux partitions and reinstalled 2006 and got it set up with all my favourite toys, fonts, etc. Everything was running sweet and I installed Cedega (326 files due to dependencies). Cedega ran fine but no 3D acceleration because of the older nVidia driver. Naturally the newer driver needs the newer kernel but after installing these I couldn't get X to start, there were Xorg components missing and I don't know enough to find and install these without a GUI.

So I upgraded to 2007 again and this time I haven't touched that abortion of a thing called Menu Style Selector.

Everything works perfectly!

I've spent the last two hours playing with Cedega and I'm very impressed. Black & White runs flawlessly and I'm getting 73 fps, that's better than I ever had it running under Windows. I also tried with Medieval Total War but forgot to enable support for large exe's. Doesn't matter, I'll try again shortly and I'm confident that it'll work properly. These are both games that haven't run properly for me under Windows ever since DirectX 9 so I'm a very happy boy right now!

I'm now very convinced that Menu Style Selector is the root of all the trouble, is there anyone out there that knows Mandriva systems well and is able to test this?

Also, will I be able to open the old MenuDrake or will attempting this just invoke that bane of my Mandriva again?

I've got to admit, there's still a couple of little irks and quirks in the system but they're so minor that it could actually be my usage habits and not the system's problems.

And I hope this journal of my trials and tribulations will be helpful to others as well.

Glad you got it sorted out. Lesson I learned the hard way: NEVER mess with the menus, live with what you have. Further lesson specific to MDV 2007: NEVER, EVER, EVER touch the "theme management." That KDE function killed my very first successful 2007 install and quickly landed me a "oh yeah, there's a bug..." reply from Mandriva.

But going back to Mandrake 7.0 where I started out, any touching of the menu editor totally messed up the whole install. Word to the wise.

Is there somewhere that a half arsed newbie like me could find a list of warnings like this?

In plain english that is, I tried going through the Mandriva buglist but that list is vast and full of technical jargon and log file print outs that mean absolutely nothing to a GUI oriented mug like me.
