having problems changing permissions
i need to change the file permisions to write for my user account in mandriva 2007 free, so that i can set up ppp but when i type chmod a+w /etc/syslog.conf or any other file the command executes with no error but when i try to open it in the text editor it wont let me save changes says that it is still read only.
another question... is there a way to login to kde as root in this version of mandriva? if so how is this accomplished.
Why don't you open a terminal and do 'su' and then run an editor from the console and edit the file. The directory may not have the proper permissions for you to write and you shouldn't change that.
