error while trying to run Firefox 1.5 (mdv2006)

Well, when I try to run Firefox, I get the following error message:

*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x08cc2010 ***

Being not really the Linux expert, I don't know what to do.
The same error message does also apply for Thunderbird 1.5 and various other applications.

Also, these errors only occured after I installed Mandriva 2006. I'm generally not very satisfied with that version, as there are many things that do not run as smoothly as before, some won't run at all. So I'm considering changing back to 2005 or trying the 2006.1 beta.

Still, I'm curious what the source of the problem is and how it can be fixed.

Thank you in advance for any help

Try installing libstdc++5 (Goto http://easyurpmi.zarb.org and setup your software sources and then use menu->System->Configuration->Packaging->Install Software)

2006.1 beta is just that - the beta version of 2006. Its the same as 2006 except it has more bugs (its older, not newer).

That was already installed, so I just installed the devel and static-devel packages.
Well, now I get another error message:

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08cc4e80 ***

(BTW, when I said I'm not a Linux expert I didn't mean I have no experience in basic things like setting up the software repository. But thanks anyway )

I beg to differ. That would be correct if we were talking about the 2006.0 beta, but they have recently released the 2006.1 beta. Check it yourself at distrowatch (cannot post the link as I do not have 5 posts).

Well, any other ideas?

Yeah you're right - I didn't think they would release any betas until nearer the next release (late 2006). I wonder if they're going to release a '2006.1' for non-club members as well? Anyway here are the links you couldn't post in case anyone else is interested: http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=03143#0

Well, I do hope so.

Anyway, it work's just fine now. Just added export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim to the startup script.
Thanks a lot!
