I have a compaq 6000 and just installed 2008.0 Free and the extended desktop feature does not work. The extra monitor is just streaky

Make sure you have the right driver for your chipset...
I'm asuming it's nVidia.

In my hardware config under Identification it lists [Geforce 6150 Go], then down below it lists under Misc Geforce 8800

OK, while you have the nVidia docs open, check in there (search) for these terms...

Dual monitor extended desktop

<edit> maybe twinview...

Notebooks...with twinview-crt...
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...hapter-18.html

ps. I get conflicting device numbers too. Just for graphics and some mobo chipset devices.

Hmmm, I'm having trouble with the config file thing. I found it, but am not sure what all needs to be done. Have you done this? Do you have a sample xorg.conf file I can look at?

Sorry, not for a long time.

Google is your friend!

Also check out any docs you may have installed with the graphics driver or X11 and xorg.

usually found in /usr/share/doc

and any logs..
/var/log

if The nvidia-readme is istalled...
file:///usr/share/doc/nvidia-current-doc-html/chapter-13.html

Here is mine and some others you can compare...
