Configuring Samba on Mandrake 9.1

Hello,

I know the samba server is running. And from Windows, when I click Run, and type in the ip, I can see the Samba Server folder. My question is, how come I didn't get a login prompt and how would I go about setting that up? I can't find a samba server configuration screen.

Also, I'm not sure as to how I can tell Samba which folder to make available to me through Windows.

Anyone know how this is configured on Mandrake 9.1?

As far as I'm aware, serious stuff with Samba on Mandrake 9.1 needs to be done by editing the /etc/samba/smb.conf file.

Back up the file, open it in a text editor (as root) and it is so well documented that you will have little (but some) difficulty in getting it right.

First get the bits at the top right. The really important ones are

workgroup
security = share
encrypt passwords = false

Then at the bottom you'll find the stuff about sharing.

To share my Windows Drive D which is mounted as /mnt/win_d I have:

[drive_d]
comment = Drive D
path = /mnt/win_d
public = yes
writable = yes

For more info you'll have to read the docs.

Cool, I saw where public folders are set in the smb.conf file. Now I'm able to access it through Windows, however it keeps asking for a guest password. Does anyone know how to set passwords for Samba?

You can add users with:
Code:
smbpasswd -a username
Give it a password and you're golden ....to change existing passwords, simply omit the -a
