I Just checked it out..... After you setup your internet conection, a dialog asking for hostname and domainname comes up (here's where i misled you sorry about that); leave both the fields blank, then a dialog asking for http proxies comes up leave those blank too. In the next one, enter, in the first field the ip address of the server(213.228.0.141), next enter the mandrakelinux directory. Leave username and password blank. After this "Loading Program into Memory" should come up(be patient)... and rest of the install stuff is simple.

Actually since you are doing a network install, i'd suggest that you install the least amount of packages you can(for now). That is leave out office/multimedia/games(and even devel(development tools)) for now.
This is because, you never know; the connection with the server may be reset(it doesnt happen often, but "luck is luck" ) and you'll have a broken box and will have to restart installation again.

Once you have installed everything and logged into KDE, just post a message here.... and we'll introduce you to the magical world of URPMI, and we'll get back all those packages you skipped during installation.

I do not know if I'm doing everything right. So heres what I'm doing.

1)I startup the computer with the network.img floppy disk.

2)A menu pos up and asks me if I want to install it or view the options. I select install.

3)A couple of files are installed and I receive a menu of which method I will install Linux I choose "Ftp"

4)I insert the second disk and it copies some files. Afterwards I receive anoption for internet connection "Static" "DHQCL" "ADSL" I have no idea what the others represent so I select "Static"

5)Next is to type in my IP address. eg.
Your IP: (I type in my IP)
IP of DNS: (I type in my IP)
IP of default Gateway: (I type in my IP)
Netmask: (The Computer fills this one in)

6)Hostname:
Domain Name:
(I Skip this part)

7)Http Proxy
(I skip this part too)

8)FTP Server: 213.228.0.141
Directory: mirrors/ftp.mandriva.com/mandrivalinux/official/2005/i586
Username: (skipped it)
Password: (skipped it)

Results from all this is "Error: failed to connect to remote host.

So what is wrong?

Make sure you are connected to the internet. You can see the logs(Alt+F3; and Alt+F1 to switch back) to see if a message saying that you are connected is present(There will be lots of messages, but you must be able to spot it if it is present).

Also, are you sure about the type of the internet connection you are using(Static/ADSL/DHCP)?

Ok, How do you connect to the internet, through a cable or through a telephone line(ADSL, not dialup) or is it through some other method?
Edit: Also, is it always on (or do you have to "connect"), and it'd be helpful if you know whether you have a static or dynamic IP address.

While i was trying the initial steps of a network install(to confirm there were no problems with the mirrors, or my instructions ) I was reminded of another installation method that'd be feasible for you(which i had completely forgotten about). You can actually download the 3 ISO images to your harddisk and then install it from a floppy(Did you see a "Hard disk" option when you chose "FTP")??

Once you choose hard disk, you will be presented with a list of partitions to choose where the image is, once you do that, you have to enter the physical path to the ISO within that partition.

I'd like to add that I've not personally tried out this method, but I dont think this would be too different from the other installation methods.

No There was no harddisk option. Do I have to download the 3 ISOs to my harddrive to get the option? So how do I begin this harddisk install (like select it)?

How do I install it from the floppy? Is it the same way as the previous method?

Then I guess, that comes only with the "all.img" file which unfortunately does not fit into a floppy(it's about 7 MB). Have you tried finding out what type of internet connection you use? And also what about those log messages(post #34)?

I have a modem and then through the telephone line. So I guess it is ADSL and I thought it was always called Dialup.

And my IP is dynamic.

Most Probably it is ADSL, but you never know!

That's good then, you can follow my instructions to the point, you will be asked for your username and password(when you choose ADSL). There will be a field name called AC Name which you can leave blank. The rest you can follow from post #31.
Atleast now I hope you manage to get Mandriva Linux installed
