Cannot start applications in blackbox

Hi I am a linux newbie and I just install Mandrake 10 on my laptop, I started
the blackbox windows manager by using "xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/blackbox". But
now I cannot run mozilla, totem player, or nautilus They would show up under
"ps aux" as processes but nothing shows up on the desktop. There must be some
configuration I haven't done. Can any one help?

Another question, when ever I start X the LCD screen is first shut down for a
second and then restarts with the GUI. Can I stop the screen from shutting down?
