bringing up interface eth0:....FAILED

I have a problem starting the network connection.

Earlier everything went fine. Since I use DHCP, the nerwork was configured automaticaly during the installation process. And I didn't care to do anything more, because everything worked.

But recently I played around a little with "Set up a new network interface (LAN,ISDN,ADSL,...)" in "Mandriva Linux Control Center" and suddenly the network disappeared. I am not 100% sure that it dissapeared because of that, but it seems like.

In any case, after trying to get alive my network for a while I decided just to reinstall Mandriva. And network didn't work anyway.

The problem is definately internal since I took a cable from nearby computer (it's in the office), which works fine, pluged it into my computer and the network didn't work.

I don't think this is a problem of the network card either: 1. the LED is on, 2. I didn't touch it, 3. computer is new.

So I guess it is some kind of software problem (this is the reason I posted the thread here), but then it is strange that the problem persists even after cleanly reinstalling Mandriva 2006.

Can anybody give at least an idea where to start looking for a solution of such a problem? (google didn't help too much )

My network card: NVIDIA nForce 4 Gigabit MAC with external Marvell PHY.

Code:
# ifconfig eth0
gives:

Code:
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:30 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0. 0 b) TX bytes:0 (0. 0 b)
Interrupt:5 Base address:0x4000
I don't know if this is usefull . And I changed hardware address to xx's.

I tried
Code:
# /etc/init.d/network restart
And then checked
Code:

# tail /var/log/messages

A little bit more information.

I reinstalled Mandriva 2006 one more time and this time the network was OK. But after half a day it dissapeared again.

I try to bring up a Mandriva terminal-server. Maby this can be the problem. Since a terminal-server is geeting its address from another DHCP server. Can it be that the network is gone because of the conflicts between these two servers?

In /var/log/messages I found these lines:

Code:
Mar 9 13:09:11 localhost dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to xxx.xxx.xx.1 port 67
Mar 9 13:09:15 localhost last message repeated 2 times
Mar 9 13:09:19 localhost kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
Mar 9 13:09:19 localhost kernel: nv_stop_tx: TransmitterStatus remained busy<7>eth0: tx_timeout: dead entries!
Mar 9 13:09:26 localhost dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to xxx.xxx.xx.1 port 67
Mar 9 13:10:03 localhost last message repeated 5 times
Mar 9 13:10:16 localhost last message repeated 3 times
When I run

Code:
# /sbin/dhclient eth0
I get these messages:

Code:

DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 17
No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
On the net I saw that the problem can be with forcedeth driver for my nVidia ehternet card. But I didn't see any sutable solution.

Can anybody give at least some hint where to start looking for a source of the problem: on my machine, ethernet card, drivers, on the first DHCP server?

if you set it for manual, did you set the ip, dns, and gateway address? i like to set my own ip address and you must have the dns set to see the internet. if you dont know what they are check on another system that is running.
