boot from the first install CD/DVD, hit F1, you'll be at a prompt with various rescue options displayed. from there you can reinstall the bootloader or create a boot disc, among other things.
when you say you couldn't install the boot loader to the MBR, what exactly do you mean? you should have been able to do that during the install, regardless if Windows is installed or not. the only 4 reasons i can think of for not being able to install the boot loader to the MBR, are........
1. you did install it to the MBR, then installed Windows after installing Mandrake. in that case, Windows will overwrite the MBR with it's own bootloader. if that's the scenerio, use the rescue command i mentioned & that will reinstall the boot loader.
if it wouldn't let you install to the MBR during the Mandrake install & Windows was installed first, check one of the following.........
2. you have some type of boot sector protection in your BIOS that won't permit it to be overwritten. check the BIOS boot sector settings for such an option & turn it off if it's on.
3. you have an anti virus in Windows that has boot sector protection turned on. turn it off.
4. a combo of 2 & 3.
