backups

Was wondering how this backing up thing works as i did a backup of the system and it only backs up the /etc folder and i know that this has most of the important system files like the fstab and stuff like that, but would just like to know how this can work, say if you have a total system crash and have to re-install, then how would this work from only the /etc folder?

You didn't mention what you used to backup your system, but I use Mondo Rescue. It creates a boot CD with your customized kernel and restores entire partitions. You'll need to find and install afio-2.5-1mdk.i586.rpm before the Mindi and Mondo RPMs on above site.

Well, I guess the idea is after you reinstall all the software you can then restore your system configuration (etc) and user data (home). Might be a good idea to FTP download all the updates and save those seperately too, especially if you have a slow internet connection like me. Using Mondo would save you a lot of reinstalling and updating hassles, though. Takes me about 20 minutes to do a full restore to an exact point-in-time.
