I went to the easy urpmi site and installed the script with no errors.

However, when I try to install something it asks for the dvd I downloaded.

I might be accessing it incorrectly, the only place I can find to update is under start-system-packages- install

which brings up rpmdrake, no mention of urpmi anywhere. How do I update using urpmi for the latest installs and does the information get broken down into groups somewhere? Like if I want a game is their a game group? with only games? or an application group broken down into, segments. I am only getting a huge list. Hard to explain.

rpmdrake and urpmi are the same thing. Copy the DVD/CD's to hard drive and map the entry in rpmdrake.

Do I get the most updated version of the software? For instance I want to uprgrade to openoffice 2.0 beta. But I can't find it in the list.

URPMI will ask for local sources first before it resorts to remote sources for RPM's

You should insert the DVD which you originally used.

If for some reason it is unavailable, remove the DVD/CD's as a "source" using the Media Manager.

The repositories provide Mandrakified software that is specifically tailored for Mandrake and the other packages in a typical Mandrake install.

As such you will often not find the very latest versions of software.

Usually you are ill advised to install the very latest versions anyway.

Doing so effectively requires that you replicate the developer's own environment and libraries.

In effect you'll end up "breaking" Mandrake and will end up with an unstable system.


But your milage may vary.

If you still have the DVD iso why not just mount it and change your source to point the mounted directory first and then the rest. This way you dont have to insert the DVD evey time.
