Anyone had any luck with Telstra NextG wireless modem on Mandriva?
Has anyone out there had luck getting Telstra's (Australia) NextG USB wireless Modem to work? The only info on it is that it's a 'Maxom' model 'BP3-USB'. I am running 2008.1 x64 on HP laptop. Thanks in advance.
driver search, http://rpm.pbone.net
search string, umtsmon
Search for rpms by name
select mandriva other (cooker, 2009.0)
[edit] Make sure you get the dependents, check the rpm page. [/edit]
1) UMTSmon is more a PoC (proof of concept) and it's no planed to exist for ever
2) AFAIK it's not planed to integrate it into kppp but sooner or later maybe into NetworkManager and with this then into KNetworkmanager, which is IMO the KDE-solution for the future.

Glen, thanks for heaps of links to info. I've installed the RPM from cooker and after hours trying different settings it won't work. Telstra is found with good signal but hangs up after every i do. I could paste the output here if that would help? It's getting late....blurry eyed.... must sleep. lol.
Interesting
Thanks for all the Links Glenn.
I have got an Aircard myself and never ever thought of attempting to get it to work on Linux.
I run Mandriva 2008.1 PWP on a Dell Laptop XPS1530.
I am going to have a peek at those links you provided.
I couldn't get to work with my huawei e220 (vodafone) although it is in the list,
kppp does not list Australia in the list of provider locations. :~
The provider and so on are already set on the modem; you just need the driver ('option' driver - kernels 2.6.18 and later work fine), pppd, and set up the chatscripts. Basically, just set up chat so that the username is anything (even a blank space, but not 'NULL') and the password is also anything. The only really important bit is the dialling code - *99# for a 'local' connection, but you can also use the international roaming number (you won't be billed for roaming unless you go - well, roaming). Roaming number: *99***1# (where 1 means the first network in the list - in this case whoever provided the SIM).

You mean a 'maxon'? Hah - poor you. I evaluated Maxon products for work about a year ago; they were such rubbish that they were put down in my little black notebook so everyone knows they shouldn't waste time looking at those products.
What's the VendorID:ProductID? The USB 'serial' device may be supported; if it is, then it's just a matter of setting up pppd.
As root, run 'lsusb' - for example:
lsusb
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem
Thanks piniped, I was wondering about those numbers, I've been switching them to try and find a difference between them.
But I'm stationary, so no wonder I had little to compare.
I've been doing that in a hunt to find how to turn off the power save (auto disconnect) function.
It seems it drops out while I'm reading or typing, then when I send or submit the message, I have to wait for the redial/connect.
Nice to know more about the chat files, I was wondering about them too, especially the no-null, space(anything) because I knew that was all in the device, but I didn't realise how to fetch it.
Too bad about the maxon products, you won't get much choice of product around here.

Quozl's Maxon BP3-USB on Linux.htm
I spent a lot of time tonight (and this morning) installing lots of different programs and devices on Mandriva 2009 "One" on a Toshiba Tecra A9 laptop. One of the things I got going was a Telstra BP3-USB (USB3-8521) usb card. I plugged it in and it detected fine and used the option driver. I first used kppp to set it up but then used umtsmon. I'll update this post with further details when I get time if anyone is interested in more detailed instructions. Initial tests at speedtest.net showed about 600kbps download, 100kbps upload with a mediocre signal strength.
