2007.1 - want to change to Smart or other package manager - need advice/help

Hi,

I am used to Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS so I have really gotten used to synaptic and apt. I want to install Smart which is closer to that system than the standard Mandriva 2007.1 Spring package manager. Should I delete my current list of repositories and then go to one of the repository sites like smart uprmi and select "Smart" as the package manger, then select repositories again?

Do you have any experiences or advice or caveats for me? Smart is good I have read, synaptic would be nice, but I don't think that it is available for Mandriva.

Thank You.

B.

synaptic is workable with mandriva, but a dependency nightmare. I was using it last year.(apt-get, and more)

It would be best to leave urpmi alone if you have it set up. In case you later require it.

No point throwing away all that data.

The best bet is to do as you suggest, go to an easy-urpmi site (this ones good)

http://www.mandrivauser.de/smarturpmi/

and where you have a choice, select smart instead of urpmi.

You may also select synthesis instead of hdlist.cz,

it's faster because it's smaller(meaning less details about packages)

I got smart, smart-gui, etc from MDE...http://www.mde.djura.org/

Thanks for your help.

For Mandriva, which repositories have things like: google Picasa, RealPlayer, Flash, Java, Quicktime codecs, Win32 codecs, etc... ?

A good flash-player is available from MDE, 2007.0 32bit. It unpacks to the correct directories, saving the hassle of moving stuff around.

Java6 is standard now.

You can get most of the codecs from PLF. Get the free and non-free, to be sure.

Picasa, I'm not sure about. But if you get the main_release google-aps-installer is available, which references picasa.

Cheers, Glenn
