1st time with Linux (Mandrake 10). Very confused. Easy question.

Hi all. This is probably a very easy question for someone out there but let me give you all the details anyways.

I am installing Mandrakelinux 10.0 Community i586 on a 3GB HD I bought just for Linux. The drive has a parttion for Linux (about 2.9GB) and one for swap files (about .1GB). I am running windows on a seperate HD.

I went through the installation discs 1-3. It then asked for a disc 4 but the site from which I ftp'd the .iso's only had discs 1-3 so I clicked cancel and the installation completed. I rebooted.

From Bootloader I chose to load Linux. Then it asked me to login a user. I logged in with the user info I entered during the installation/setup. Then I get what looks basically like a command prompt from UNIX or DOS. I have no idea what to do from here and I can not find a list of commands to use. I was expecting a Windows-like graphical environment. Where did I go wrong? I chose GNOME as the default desktop during setup. If this was wrong, how do I change it?

Thanks.

Well i've got an idea that disc 4 is only available to club members of a certain level and above. So it's safe to just cancel it.

And the "doslike" command prompt sounds like you either didn't manage to install a window manager, or the init level is set to 3 and if so, you'd then have to login with your username and password, but it will probably still just get you the system login, but with your username.

So boot the linux, follow the instructions, when the prompt appears, login as root + root password, then type startx and see what happens, or you could try either gnome or gdm.

if it's something to do with your graphic card selection or whatever, you should get something about it in the error message.

Oh, and it's often worth while just installing the default stuff, but what I do is to select all the stuff down the left of the package selection box (except LSB, because otherwise you get a 2.4 series kernel), plus kde and gnome. Then I finish the install from there, though I do tell it that I don't want a default window manager login. I prefer it to be able to use the dropdown during login - the fact that I tend to use kde is irrelevant.

regards

John

startx is just what I needed. Using Mozilla now. Thanks everybody! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions once I get into this. Thanks again!

Mike, before you get too excited, I'd reboot it to see if it does the same thing again. You may have to find out how to set your init level to 5 (which is the graphic log in level).

regards

John

just play around with mandrake control center, i think you can set it to automatically login to graphical mode somewhere in there.

If you click on the Boot icon in the control center you can enable the x server to start automatically and also set up auto login if you choose.

I have some easy to follow how tos that will get you going with the other software. www.linuxloader.com
